How to make paper weight and size calculations for printing

If you’re new to the business and looking to understand paper calculations, here’s a quick primer!

Q: How do I calculate paper m weight?

Length x width / 950 x basis weight x 2

Example: 25 x 38, 60 lb litho – 25 x 38 / 950 x 60 x 2 = 120 M

Q:  How do I calculate board m weight?

Length x width / 144 x basis weight for caliper

Example: 28 x 40 / 144 x 37 (using basis weight for C1S 8pt SBS) = 288 M

Q: How do I calculate roll size for sheeting?

To calculate roll width required for sheeting if a square sheet is required:

Add ½ inch for board and ¾ inch for paper to the sheet width for single out and for double out add the sheet size twice plus either ½ or ¾ inch for trim depending on the product.

Example:  Sheet 28 x 40

Single-out roll would be 28 + .5 = 28.5 for board and 28 + .75 = 28.75 for paper.
Double-out roll would be 28 + 28 + .5 = 56.5 for board and 28 + 28 +.75 = 56.75 for paper
